First Craft Club – Wednesday 4th April 2012 – 7.30pm

Do you want to meet up with others to share your love of craft, or learn new skills from fellow WI members?

For six Wednesdays (initially) we’ll be meeting at SIDAC Social Club at 7.30pm (small room straight ahead of you as you walk into the building) to get together and share our love of all things crafty. Bring along whatever you’re working on or anything you’ve finished that you think others would like to ooh and aah over.

We didn’t get nearly enough time to look at everything brought to our Show and Tell at the last meeting but it certainly showed how skilled and talented our members are.

If you’re a beginner or looking to learn a new (to you) craft, then what better place to get to know about a craft from a fellow member?

There won’t be any formal tutoring at the sessions, but there will be needles, hooks and yarn for people to have a go at things.

We’ll also be looking at the potential for us to take on some projects such as Linus Blankets (comfort blankets-knitted, crochet or quilt) for children in hospitals/hospices and the Dress a Girl Around the World project (dresses made out of a pillowcase).

Venue Location:

Membership News

We are thrilled to announce that we now have 44 signed up members of our new Women’s Institute for St Helens. We had over 60 attendees at our last meeting and are expecting a great turn out next week too.

If you are thinking of joining us and becoming a member the fees for 2012 are £31.50 which gives you membership up until December 2012.

The fee offers great value for money as you are not only gaining member benefits to the St Helens WI, but also the Lancashire Federation and National WI.

The National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) is the largest voluntary organisation for women in the UK, with 210,000 members in England, Wales and the Islands.

The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

As part of your membership you will automatically receive the WI Life magazine, which is published 8 times a year.

The Lancashire Federation of Women’s Institutes (which St Helens is part of) is now in it’s 92nd year and has 6000 members in 143 WI’s. These are located in quiet rural villages, busy towns and urban communities. There are many opportunities to meet up and enjoy organised trips, talks, craft courses and much more with the Lancashire Federation.

This is all on top of what we are organising ourselves. We currently have a book club, a quilt school, a craft club, theatre visit and garden visit underway in addition to our regular monthly meeting. With a lot more planned too.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up and be part of it. Membership forms can be downloaded here or complete one on the night of a meeting. Cash or cheques (payable to WISH) to accompany the form please.

Visitors are asked to make a voluntary donation of £3 per visit, upto a maximum of 2 visits per year before joining.

If you have any questions or queries, please drop us a line at wisthelens@gmail.com

Book Club Review – Before I Go To Sleep: S.J. Watson

SJ Watson, Before I Go to sleep, Book Group, Review, WomenSo we have held our first book club meeting and what a success it was. 15 of our members attended to discuss our first book – S.J.Watson’s debut novel, Before I Go To Sleep.

The majority of our group found it a fascinating read with just 2 feeling neither positive nor negative about the book. We looked at how the book explored Christine’s life and whether realistically she might have written a synopsis of her daily diary to stop having to spend so much time each day reading it through.

We looked at how we might feel if we woke up every day having no knowledge of who we were and concluded that we found the book to be extremely well written. We all felt uncomfortable at times reading Christine’s thoughts.

Members of the group felt that perhaps Christine would just ‘know’ she was a mother but weren’t sure how she would just feel it.

When we were asked if we liked the main character, Christine, the overwhelming feeling was that we were just glad we weren’t in her position. Even more scary then that the author, after writing the book, discovered a case in the US very similar to this one.

The Ending of the book caused great discussion in that most of us would have been disappointed if everything had turned out completely fine. We did agree that we wanted a sequel to find out what happened next!

All-in-all a super choice for our first book group read and so onto book number 2…

We had a discussion about what we might like to read next and decided we vote on some suggestions, so over to you, voting closes on Monday 9th April so we can announce the winning book at the next meeting.
